History: This is where it all began! I did my first race on this bike way back in 1992. It was my only bike for some time, before I gained a road bike, so was used for riding to school and mountain biking at least twice a week. I continued to race it until I went to America in 2000 (and bought Stumpy 2). It has also seen touring action in the UK and France. I had the frame powder coated after two years - much tougher than the original paint, it has lasted pretty well subsequently. I am worried that the frame is rusting from the inside out though..... The bike has been through quite a lot of components over the years - the only original parts left are the frame, fork, rear brake and thumbshifters. In 2008, having brought Stumpy over to Oregon, I stripped the frame (had to melt the old BB cups out!), filled the dents and resprayed it a fetching sapphire blue. Purpose: It might look a little retro now, but good ol' Stumpy still rides very well. I don't ride it quite so often these days, but it is still a lot of fun out in the woods. And you can't beat the rumble of a Tioga disc drive! Reconditioned with new paint and a few new 'period' components: ![]() As it was: ![]() And when it was new, back in 1991 - from a MBUK test (they said the grey finish looked 'cool and understated'!): ![]()
