Well last winter I didn't have to train as such - because I was bike touring round Australia and New Zealand, I got all the miles done that I needed to. In fact, apart from for a few weeks prior to the hillclimbs, I barely feel like I trained this past season; I obviously did, but it was enough point- to-point riding and mountain biking that it was all just fun, rather than feeling like hard work! So, it being November now, I am in my off-season, but very keen to start riding in earnest once more. I don't actually know what my goals are for next year yet, but I want to get a solid base over the next three months as usual, then see what I have lined up by then. In planning out my training, I looked at what I did two years ago, which was acheived whilst working in the UK, so most of the riding was done in the dark and wet and cold (cheers to my training partner Cameron, would've been hard without you!), and figured that since I am here in Lanzarote now, I should be able to aim a bit higher. So here are my stated aims; we'll see how things go as to whether I meet the targets, or if it proves to be a bit too ambitious! Although the hours are the important thing, I prefer to think in distance - this year I'll be working in kilometres, owing to my location - but I've worked out time goals too, based on a 27km/h average speed. If I end up not going that fast it doesn't matter, as long as I get the hours done. I've tried to plan the weeks around having visitors and the bike weeks here, I just may need to take a few extra days off work in the big weeks.
* Ill. So missed three days training. C'est la vie. ** Decided to rest properly for the mtb race, which paid off. Back to it next week! |
