Background:
Having built my superlight Bike Friday I was curious about how light a more standard model could be built. I was also
interested to try out a design idea for a BF with an aheadset (instead of the usual 1-1/4" threaded headset). This bike is
mostly a standard Pocket Rocket Pro, with the following modifications:
1-1/8" headset
Fork has regular steel crown and legs (no dropout eyelets) with a titanium threadless steerer
Machined down front derailleur hanger
No rack bosses on wishbone
Full length one-piece titanium seatmast/seatpost with brazed on binder
Prototype titanium stem with inserted steel bar clamp
Prototype ahead cap with independent tension adjustment
1-3/4" butted mainframe (instead of usual 2")
Titanium bolt instead of quick release at folding connection
Cable routing all on left of frame with headtube mounted guides
I asked our resident welder to work his magic after I cut the tubes, then I brazed up the rest of the frame and the fork,
and built the stem and seatpost. The bike is built up with a full Campagnolo Chorus groupset. To pack it only a 5mm hex
key is required - to take the split bars from the stem, take the stem and seatpost from the bike and to fold the frame.
The bike rides very nicely, although the titanium stem may be a little too flexy, we'll see.
